Filter Ledger / Clean and replace
A layer-by-layer check · US manufacturer sources reviewed October 20, 2026
Clean the layer the manual says to clean. Replace the layer it says to replace.
A purifier can have a washable pre-filter beside a main filter that must not be washed. These examples are tied to three exact US models; they are not a general schedule for every purifier, even within the same brand.
Start with the full model and manual. If the suffix, market, installed filter, or manual revision does not match, stop here and use the instructions for the unit you own. Do not wash a filter because another layer or model is washable.
Levoit Core 300S · US manual
Clean only the outer pre-filter
- Outer pre-filter
- Every 2–4 weeks, use a soft brush or vacuum hose. The manual says not to use water or other liquids.
- True HEPA + activated carbon
- Do not clean. The manual gives a 6–8 month filter life as a check/replacement guide; the indicator is a reminder to check, and the filter may not need replacement when it first lights.

Wash the pre-filter; leave the main filters alone
- Reusable pre-filter
- Every 2–4 weeks, unplug the purifier first. Vacuum or wash with water depending on contamination, then remove moisture completely before reinstalling.
- Deodorization + True HEPA
- The manual says these cannot be cleaned and reused. Coway's layer-by-layer specification lists 6 months for deodorization and 1 year for HEPA. The same product page also summarizes the set as lasting up to 6 months; both are manufacturer estimates, based on conditions in the manual, not a diagnosis of your filter. Check the exact manual or ask Coway if its summaries conflict.

Three layers, three different instructions
- Permanent pre-filter
- Check/clean every 14 days. Vacuum or use a soft brush; if excessively soiled, rinse with room-temperature water, without soap, and let it dry for at least 24 hours.
- Washable AOC carbon filter
- The manual's service table says every 3 months; it may be washed up to four times. Rinse without soap, dry at least 24 hours, and do not use water hotter than 104°F (40°C).
- True HEPA
- Do not wash. The manual lists replacement at about 12 months; environment and use can change the interval.

What these schedules cannot tell you
- They do not establish that another model or regional variant uses the same layers, cleaning method, or interval.
- Dust appearance, odor, or a reminder light alone does not let this page measure remaining filtration performance.
- Do not clean or reuse a non-washable main filter. Follow the exact manual and contact the maker if its instructions conflict with the installed part.
If the question is a light that stays on, use the model-specific indicator/reset guide. For a newly installed filter with an unfamiliar odor, see the filter smell and setup checklist.
Evidence is limited to the named US model records and sources linked above, checked October 20, 2026. The Reddit discussions that prompted this guide are owner anecdotes: they establish that people ask what to wash or replace, not how common the confusion is or what any filter can safely tolerate. Canadian and UK builds preserve this source-market limitation; localization does not establish local product variants, stock, warranty, or instructions.
