A model-first setup check · sources reviewed October 20, 2026

A new filter smells different. Check the exact setup before guessing.

An odor report by itself cannot identify its source, tell you whether a filter is defective, or establish whether the air is safe. Start with the complete purifier model and replacement code, then follow only that maker’s instructions.

If the odor is bothering you or causes discomfort: stop using the purifier and contact its manufacturer or the filter seller for advice. This page cannot assess exposure, diagnose a fault, or tell you that a smell is harmless.

Three checks that do not rely on smell as a diagnosis

  1. 01

Match the whole model and filter code

Read the full model from the purifier label, including every suffix. Compare the replacement’s exact code with a manufacturer page or manual. A seller title, similar dimensions, or a shared model-family number does not establish fit.

Search the manufacturer-linked model index ↗ · Find the model label ↗

  2. 02

Check packaging and placement against that manual

Some makers explicitly instruct owners to remove the new filter’s protective plastic and install the filters in a named order or direction. These details differ by model. Do not copy another purifier’s order, wash a filter, add fragrance, or alter the media unless the exact manual says to.

Examples: the US Levoit LV-H128 manual warns against running that model with plastic wrap on the filter and against adding essential oils to its filters. Coway’s US AP-1512HH product instructions say to remove plastic wrapping and install filters in the proper order. WINIX’s North American FAQ also says to remove protective bags and secure filters in the order shown for the unit. These are examples, not transferable steps for other models.

  3. 03

If it continues, keep the record and ask the maker

Note privately when the smell began, the full purifier model, the filter code, where it was purchased, and what the exact manual says. Do not post serial numbers, QR codes, or personal details publicly. Ask the manufacturer or seller whether they want the unit or filter inspected; this lookup cannot determine whether the part is faulty.

For a used or hard-to-identify purifier, start with the model-label guide. If your concern is a filter light rather than a smell, use the separate model-specific reset guide.

What the sources actually say

Keep each manufacturer’s advice in its own lane.

WINIX America

Its FAQ says new-unit filter materials can produce an initial odor and suggests running the unit in a separate room for about a day if concerned. It separately lists contaminated filters and improperly washed/dried washable carbon filters as possible odor cases. That is WINIX’s general North American FAQ, not a universal explanation, fixed timeline, or safety finding. Follow your exact model manual and stop if operation makes you uncomfortable.

Levoit LV-H128

The manual says not to run this exact model with protective filter wrap still on and says essential oils can damage its filters and eventually create an unpleasant smell. It does not establish that oil or plastic wrap is the cause of any particular owner’s odor.

Coway AP-1512HH

The US product instructions say to remove filter plastic and install the named filter layers in the proper order. The page does not provide an odor diagnosis; consult the full manual or Coway support for a concern that remains.

Do not use a forum anecdote as a fix. Individual owners report strong smells from new or replacement filters, sometimes alongside discomfort. Those posts establish that people ask this question; they do not show how common it is, what caused an individual smell, or whether running longer, cutting a layer, or trying a third-party filter is safe or effective.

Owner pain examples: a 2026-02-02 Levoit EverestAir thread describes a strong smell after purchase and conflicting experiences with replacement filters; a 2026-03-28 thread describes sensitivity to several purifier filters. Both are individual Reddit posts, not prevalence or technical evidence. Manufacturer pages and manuals linked here were checked October 20, 2026. Examples are US/North American sources and do not establish Canadian or UK fit, availability, warranty, or local guidance.
